Personal Best
7 Miles Today; What a great month of May, and to end it with my best mileage week since I started walking in Oct. 2006. Forrest logged 63 miles for the week. Also had a personal best for the month. My total of 257 miles for May was 24 miles better than my previous high of 233. Forrest is only 3 miles from Missouri. I cross the river tomorrow, than head South to St. Joseph, Mo. then it's on to Iowa and the City Of Waterloo. Forrest has a big day ahead of him. I have three Div. II Baseball games to announce. The weather is perfect, low 70's and sunny.

Senior Wisdom
10 Miles Today; It pays to listen to your elders. Case in point, a while back Forrest had heel problems during his walk. Instead of stopping and taking care of the situation, which turned out to be a small pebble wedged in my sock. Forrest finished his walk with a BLOODY heel. Fast forward to today, the same scenario developed. Forrest remembered what Tri-Girl's father told her, and she repeated the phrase to me. "You're Entitled To The Pain Of Your Decision" so with that knowledge, Forrest stopped and fixed his problem, then continued the final 6 miles of my walk in "zero" pain. Surprise, Surprise, with my 10 miles today Forrest entered the town of Auburn a day ahead of schedule. There's nothing special here, so Forrest is keeping his foot on the accelerator and heading East on Hwy 136. Missouri is 10 miles away. Walk Forrest Walk

Spring Has Sprung
8 Miles Today; Forrest got his miles in before his 10:30 dentist appointment. My time was 2 hours & 7 minutes. Yesterday, my legs felt heavy, the same route today was a totally different story. Forrest felt like he could have walk all the way to the Mackinaw Bridge. As of right now, Forrest is on Hwy 75 heading South to Auburn, Nebraska. It is 9 miles to the city limits. So Forrest will get there Saturday morning. Then head East on Hwy 136 until I come to the Missouri River. Then it's "So Long, Nebraska" and "Hello, Missouri" Before I sign off, Forrest would like to say "Hi, to Tri-Girl, Forrest is amazed on how hard you train. I tip my hat to you. Forrest will check his sources to see if Tri-Girl could have already passed the Man, without me even knowing it. If you are ahead of me, take your R&R in Waterloo, Iowa. Waterloo, it is a special place for Forrest to visit. I can't wait to get there. Now a special shout out to Dr. William S. and his assistant Kathy, for a super job they did on Forrest. I think the reason I got special treatment is because I wore Blue & Gold. Forrest is no dummy. GO BLUE GO WOLVERINES GO MAIZE & BLUE....I think I have all the bases covered. Short Timer
8 Miles Today; It was so cold this morning that Forrest wore gloves. It was 33 degrees and a pretty good frost on the lawns & roofs. It won't be long before I cross the river at Brownville, Nebraska and set foot on Missouri soil. Forrest is heading south on Hwy 75, just 12 miles from Auburn, then east 12 miles to the border. Forrest has only 3 days left to be a "Cornhusker". Well now it is time to get "Jacked-Up" for my stretching class in about an hour. Forrest is getting chilled sitting here with his sweaty cloths on, so I bid you good-bye, it's bath time. Walk Forrest Walk

Downtown Nebraska City
7 Miles Today; Forrest had his best time today. One hour & 49 min. 30 sec. for my 7 mile route. I put myself on the stop-watch, the pace was 15min 38 sec/mile...the weather was cool, 46 degrees this morning. Yesterday we had our 1st 80 degree day of the year. Today at 4pm, Forrest has a baseball tournament game to announce at Dewitt High School , between the #1 team in the state, Mt. Pleasant, & St. Johns. The winner plays Saturday, joining Dewitt, Alma, and Remus Chippewa Hills. for the Division II District Baseball Championship. Instead of crossing the Missouri River here at Nebraska City, I'm turning south on Hwy 75 and heading for Aurburn, Nebraska. (approx. 25 miles) It's looks like Forrest will arrived in Aurburn on Saturday of this week. Until tomorrow, Walk Forrest Walk

Guten Tag
8 Miles Today; Perfect walking weather, Forrest worked up a good sweat this morning. My time was 2 hr & 13 min. Renae had some sort of cranberry energy drink waiting for me when I walked through the door. How's that for service? Since Renae is heading back to Chicago this afternoon, my bride will have to pick up where Renae left off. Protein Balls & Energy Drink for the Man when he comes through the door. I think it will snow in Miami Beach before that comes to past. Tomorrow Forrest enters the fine town of Nebraska City, (population 7300). Forrest is 7 miles away. Not only is Nebraska City, the birthplace of Arbor Day, and the Applejack Festival. The town once had a German-language newspaper called Nebraska Staats-Zeitung. With the paper's help many Germans decided to move to Nebraska in the l800's and early 1900's. I bid you farewell, "Guten Tag" (Good Day in German) Walk Forrest Walk

The Perfect Storm
15 Miles Today; Four hours and ten minutes, yes that's right 4-10 for the walking man. Everything fell exactly right this morning. Sunday morning, no traffic except near St. Jude's. The weather was beautiful, 62 degrees when I left and 72 when I got back. Of course, my daughter is taking credit for my sudden jump in miles. You see, between Renae giving me energy drinks, (which Forrest can't even pronounce the name of the product) and my bride making me eat "protein balls" and "bongo balls" Forrest "is jacked" to run a 3 minute mile. What ever happened to steak, potatoes and gravy?? Now Forrest is 17 miles from Nebraska City, home of Arbor Day and "The Applejack Festival". FYI the East West streets are called Corso, it's the Italian word for street. Now remember this important tidbit from Forrest, it may possibly win you a beer, in a trivia contest with your friends. Memorial Day Weekend
8 Miles Today; Very nice morning for walking. Between Joanne's Bongo Balls, Protein Balls, & energy supplements Renae brought home for her Pop, Forrest had to be on the look out for "speed traps". Right now I'm just got on Hwy. 43 heading east to Nebraska City. Forrest should arrive there Wednesday of next week. From there it's on to St. Joesph, Missouri. My brother Tom clued me in on St. Joesph, more on this later. Forrest had a great week of walking. I logged in a very nice 58.5 miles. The same as last week. Until tomorrow Walk Forrest Walk

Let The Good Times Roll
8 Miles Today; Nice walking day, a cool sunny day. Sixty degrees for today, but Monday the weatherman says that we might be looking at 80, now that is AC conditions for Michigan. It's much warmer here in Lincoln, Forrest won't be out of the city limits until tomorrow. Hwy. 2 turns in to Hwy 43 at Bennett, Nebraska. From Bennett to Nebraska City, is approx. 40 miles of open road. Forrest also noticed he is getting real close to the "Show Me State" (Missouri). Forrest is getting a lot more miles per week, I think the feet, hip, & muscles (stretching class) all feeling great, dictates to more distance. Forrest also give credit to my bride for making me consume extra protein balls. Who knows, Nome Alaska, could be in Forrest's future. God Bless Walk Forrest Walk

Up-staged By A 6th Grader
8 Miles Today; Lincoln, Nebraska 11-Year-Old Wins National Geographic Bee. Talk about bad timing, Forrest arrives in town, and nobody has a clue that I'm here. From a field of 5 million 6 graders, a local genius wins 1st place and $25,000 cash for winning the Geographic Bee yesterday in Washington D.C. So the kid knows what country the city of Balkh is located, big deal,,,,,,"Let the little Albert Einstein try to keep up with Forrest when I head out of town on my way to Nebraska, City. Nebraska, City is southeast on Hwy.2. approx. 50 miles from here. So since Forrest is not getting a formal welcoming luncheon, I'm stopping at Taco-Bell then getting out of Dodge. The moral of this story is "Timing, my friend, Timing". I leave today's post with what my Bride (Joanne) will tell Forrest. "Get Over It" Walk Forrest Walk

Anti-Treadmill
8 Miles Today; The mileage could be 10 miles today, why you ask, the first half of our stretching class was devoted to the treadmill. For me that was like asking a fish to swim. Since Forrest already had his morning walk done, I sure didn't need a lesson on the stupid treadmill. I was a good sport about it, because I knew the last half of my "Y" class would be devoted to stretching and a little bit of yoga. Stretching is the best for people of my age group, I just love it. Now for the important stuff, Lincoln Nebraska. Forrest is anxiously waiting for tomorrow. Seven miles is all that's left before I enter the city limits. Forrest is signing off with a little more of important facts about this fine state. First, Nebraska is the birth place of the Reuben sandwich. The largest Kolache Festival in the world is located in Prague, Nebraska. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Prague would be a good fit for a Kolache (pastry) Festival. Nebraska also has more miles of river than any other state in the union. The state nickname used to be the"Tree Planter's State", but was changed in 1945 to what is now called the "Cornhusker State". Now this is something to be proud of, The University of Nebraska Cornhusker football team has produced more Academic All-Americans than any other Division I school. Forrest is changing directions tomorrow. God Bless Walk Forrest Walk

Today's History Lesson
8 Miles Today; Cool but nice today, 52 degrees. So today with Forrest only 15 miles from Lincoln, I thought I would bring you some valuable information everybody should about Lincoln. You already know it's the home of Big Red Football, The University Of Nebraska, (notice the little cheerleaders in the picture). Lincoln, population 192,000. Lincoln is the birthplace of these famous people. Dick Cheney, Vice President of the United States. Hilary Swank, Oscar winning actress; Know for her roles in Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby. Speaking of history lessons, how's this, The 911 system of emergency communications, now used nationwide, was developed and first used in Lincoln. And last but not least, this is for my Daughter Renae, from Chi-Town. August 30th , 2008, there is a huge football battle between The Nebraska Cornhuskers & the Western Michigan University Broncos. Forrest predicts this encounter will have the whole nation tuned in to see who comes out victorious. Forrest just knows the Dallas Guy will be watching this clash of Titans. Walk Forrest Walk

7 Miles Today; Forrest got out this morning @ 5:10 am, I know Forrest got the worm before Tri Girl even got out of bed. (YES) My time was l hr 53 min. Not much to say about Seward, Nebraska. It has a population of 6700 and the town was named after a one time Sec. Of State of Neb. (Wow). I do know Forrest is 27 miles from the University of Nebraska. Forrest wore gloves this morning, also we had a nice FROST. Now I got to get pretty for my stretching class at the "Y". Got to look good for the Girls......Ha-Ha Walk Forrest Walk

Blast Off
11.5 Miles Today; Started the week off right. Forrest waited until noon to walk, wishing it would make it to 60 degrees, but it never made it. So, no shorts for me today. Instead it was early winter gear for today's hike of 3 hrs and 20 minutes. I'm a little late for my posting. Not much happening Hwy 34. Tomorrow Forrest arrives in Seward. I can't say anything about Seward as yet, because Forrest has got to read up on this city tonight. I'm positive I'll find something interesting to pass on. Inquiring minds want to know. Me & Jessie-Marie
7 Miles Today; Just me & my pooch today. No ipod, radio, no wife. Just Forrest, the DOG & Mother Nature. The sun rising above the trees, and the birds singing was all Forrest needed. Besides my bride rides her bike 12 miles a day now with her friend Audrey. My bride has a bum knee so she rides now instead of walking. She gets up at 4:45 am each day to meet Audrey. Joanne has so many blinking lights on her bike and body, that she looks like the Midway at the Ingham County Fair. Saftey, comes first people. Forrest had another good week for miles. I put 58.5 on this old frame. Forrest has got to start thinking about new shoes pretty soon. Now down to business. I'm 46 miles from Lincoln. Forrest is thinking about a side trip into Czech Country in a couple of days to take in the local flavor. More on that at a later date. Art Festival in East Lansing today.......Walk Forrest Walk

Garage Sale Super Bowl
9.5 Miles Today; It wasn't my fastest time but one of most interesting. Forrest's time of 2 hours and 40 minutes was spent keeping out of the way of all the vehicles, and "Garage Sale Queens" it seems today is the mother of all garage sale days in Dewitt. Or should Forrest say, "The Dewitt Garage Sale Super Bowl". So what does my bride do.......She ruins my beloved truck! You see, she borrowed my baby and proceeded to pop a hole in the brake line, (Mother Nature was the culprit, rust was the cause) and of course lost all the brake fluid. You'd think the little Woman would get discourage and come home and call it a day. Wrong, the queen bees of Dewitt's GarageSales are Joanne Ebert and Kathy Ives. (Joanne's friend & neighbor) Dick, Kathy's hubby was cleaning his truck, and low and behold the Bandits kidnapped his pride and joy so they could continue their dastardly deeds. So there you have it. That's why Forrest is in York, Nebraska. No pressure, just a nice prime dinner at the "Chances "R" Restaurant" and be on the road again with Lincoln on my mind. Hmmmmm, "Lincoln On My Mind" does Forrest smell a No #l song added to his resume. I leave with a shout out Tri-Girl, thanks for the information on keeping your energy level up on long walks. I ran a copy of it and will refer to it often. My bride will be getting a big supply of Jelly Beans for her MAN. Well it's time to sign off, Forrest is getting chilly, I still got my walking stuff on. God Bless Walk Forrest Walk

Turn On The Search Lights
11 Miles Today; My time was 3 hours 5 minutes. Forrest is excited about arriving in York tomorrow. With only 5 miles to go before entering the city limits, Forrest should be looking pretty when I shake hands with the city fathers. With a population of 8000, York is my kind of town. The town was named after York, England and York, Pennsylvania 135 years ago. York is located at the intersection of Highway 81 and Interstate 80, 50 west of Lincoln Nebraska...FYI, York is credited for being the birthplace of this nations 4-H organization. Without farmers this nation is in deep doo-doo, (no pun intended.) Today's walk was sunny and cool 60, great for walking. Forrest hit the wall at the 9 miles. It seemed like my tank ran out of fuel. I limped home thanks to my ipod, Elvis, Alan Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, & Bob Seger. Forrest needs Tri-Girl's advice on nutrition for quick energy. God Bless Walk Forrest Walk

Raindrops Falling On My Head
8 Miles Today; Forrest left the house at 5:30am in a light rain. The temperature was 61 degrees, so it wasn't so bad. Forrest will always remember what our Priest said during a sermon when I was a little kid about 12years old. It was a rainy Sunday morning, and hardly anybody was at church. He scolded the parishioners by saying "you people can come to church when it rains, your cars won't shrink." So that's what Forrest used for motivation to complete my morning walk. Forrest is 16 miles west of York, Nebraska, home of the York October Czechfest, (October 5)....I can hear the music already, Forrest is ready to shake a leg. Friday night I'll be in York, and the first place on the itinerary,is Chances "R" Restaurant" for my prime rib. Medical update, my lower back is a lot better, but both hamstrings are a little tender. My Wednesday "Y" class is in 45 min. Forrest will try to keep a better grip on his exploits today. No trying to impress the ladies...Walk Forrest Walk

Aurora Borealis
7 Miles Today; Northern Lights, according to legend, that's what the early settlers saw when they came to this region around 1861, so the settlement was named Aurora. The official verison goes like this, Aurora, Nebraska was named after Aurora, Illinois by an early settler, whose wife was a native of the Illinois town. Aurora, population 4300 is situated just six miles off I-80 on Hwy 34. Forrest is on the main street and is not that impressed, after I change my socks, I'm heading east to York, 24 miles away. Forrest is kind of excited, because Viame Vas to Czech Country. York and Wilbur, Nebraska. Forrest had a small setback yesterday at my senior stretching class at the "Y". It seems Forrest was trying to impress the 4 ladies in my class (the youngest being 61 years old) by touching the floor, instead of his shoes. Oh well, what's a little pulled, lower back muscle. Forrest just has to learn the hard way. Walking today really did loosen me up. The help of 2 Extra Strength Tylenol was greatly appreciated. Forrest's time today is a closely guarded secret. I will be given out on a "need to know" request. I almost forgot, Viame Vas (We Welcome You). Until tomorrow, Walk Forrest Walk

America's Heartland
8 Miles Today; I'm doing my blog in sweaty clothes. Forrest had a good time this morning, I left at 5:20am, got home ant 7:30. That's a 16.5 pace. That's good for this veteran of many summers, come and gone. Morning walks and lighter clothing makes a difference for the walking man from Dewitt, Mi. The weather this morning was 52 degrees with a high of 60. That's cool for this time of year. Forrest has a 10am stretching class and a 4pm baseball double-header to announce. I'll be in the press box, so it's not uncomfortable for me. The parents on cold aluminum stands, really have to bundle up. Being in America's Heartland has been a pleasure for Forrest. Tomorrow I arrive in Aurora, pop.4300. On June 22, 2003, the largest hailstone ever measured fell in Aurora from a thunderstorm. It had a diameter of 7.1 inches and a circumference of 18.75 inches. My God, that's bigger than a softball. Forrest doesn't want to die from ice injuries before I get to Lincoln, Go Big Red.. Walk Forrest Walk

8 Miles Today; Forrest arrived home about 30 minutes before it started to rain. It threaten the whole time I was walking. My time was 6 minutes slower that yesterday. That's O.K. it's Mother's Day, and Forrest had his Family with him. Well, for a little while anyway. Jessie-Marie's has a sore right paw. (arthritis) A my Bride was having trouble with her bad knee. So Forrest did the last 3 miles all by his little old self. My walk today was un-eventful. I am a little closer to York, approx. 15 miles to go. Strong Finish
8 Miles Today; The nice weather is still here, at least for another day. Sunny and 68 degrees. Forrest better enjoy it while it last. Tomorrow they say rain off and on all day. Forrest is good at avoiding raindrops. My total miles this week is 55.5 There seems to be a direct evidence that nice weather, and no aches or pains leads to extra miles on the body. Now my sites are set on the town of Aurora Neb, some 20 mile east of my location on Hwy. 34. Then comes York, Nebraska and a must stop over, to visit and dine at the famous Chances R Restaurant for a nice prime rib meal. Even though Grand Island is in my rear-view mirror, Forrest will always remember this wonderful city on the plains of the Midwest. I close out the week by saying "you better start feeling better, tri-girl". Forrest puts more effort in, when somebody is trying to chase him down. Take Care, Walk Forrest Walk

Forrest Is On A Walking High
8 Miles Today; No shorts today, too cool, around 46 degrees when I left. Nice walking, my time was 2 hr. and 11 min. Unless something comes up it looks like a 50 mile plus week. 50 miles sounds so much better to Forrest than 40 something. But I will settle for the smaller numbers, because a person never knows when he will get a Flat Tire....My hips and feet are in good condition now, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. Forrest is in Alda, Nebraska, not much here, not one person waved to the walking guy. The ESPN truck must have gotten lost. Oh well, tomorrow it's Grand Island, Nebraska. Forrest wants his daughter Renae, to let her business associates from Grand Island, informed that the MAN, is coming to town. Since Nebraska is a Red State, and Forrest is wearing red, I should make a very good impression. (I hope). FYI, Henry Fonda, Academy-winning film actor, was born in Grand Island, May 16, 1905. Smooth Sailing
8 Miles Today; Nice walking this morning, the weather was a little breezy and 62 degrees. Forrest is in the small town of Wood River, Neb. population 1204. The name Wood River is easy to explain. In the mid 1800's the settlers saw a tree lined spot on the Platte River and bingo the name Wood River was born. Tomorrow Forrest will be in Alda Neb. the last small town before Grand Island. Interstate 80 is about one mile south of me, but Forrest likes small town America much better. Forrest is content to stay on good old Hwy 34 all the way to Lincoln. Got to head out for the "Y" my stretching classes start a 10am for one hour. Then I'll come home and see what the Bride has in the Ice Box. Walk Forrest Walk

Grand Island Nebraska
7 Miles Today; Today was a really nice day. Forrest took one of scenic routes. I had good company, Jessie-Marie (the pooch) was my date for the day. Let me tell ya, she went straight to the water bowl when we got home. Forrest just had his normal peeled grapefruit. To me that's better than water for your thirst. At noon the weather was a warm, sunny day, with the temperature in the low 70's. Forrest is approx. 23 mile west of Grand Island. O.K. listen up troops, here is your history lesson for today. Grand Island, Nebraska pop 43,000. In 1857, thirty-five German settlers left Davenport, Iowa, and headed west to Nebraska to start a new settlement in an area of land known by French traders as La Grande Isle. It was called this because there was a large island in the Platte River near the settlement. Part of the reason for this expedition was because the Railroad had to have stops every 150 miles so that railroad engines could refuel. On July 4, 1857 they reached their destination and had built more permanent housing using local timber. A fire set by a prospector who hated Germans destroyed the first settlement in 1859. The settlement moved north of the Platte River. which is the present location of the town today. While no longer an island, they kept the name of Grand Island. Good, for them. No Civil War Names......... Walk Forrest Walk

Tour Guide
6 Miles Today; Today was a first for Forrest, not only was it a nice sunny day, I got to be a guide for an old buddy I used to work with at GM. Since he is also retired, Ron S. from St. Johns came to my place with his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. I hadn't seen Ron in 3 years. So instead of sitting in Lazy Boys and drinking coffee, Forrest took Ron on a short tour of one of his routes. I have three established routes, a 5.5.......6.......and 7 mile circuits. It was nice, we got caught up on the all the news from work. We both agreed, that retirement is a whole lot better than working. I think it is nap time for Forrest, between yesterday's, and this mornings walks, and my 10am stretching class at theYMCA, I need to check out the INSIDE of my eyelids. 11.5 Miles Today; It was a great day to walk. Temperature 61 degrees and sunny. I went out at 10am and got back at 1:10pm. Forrest could have went further but this old boy got some hunger pains. The bride told me she had a roast in the oven and what time it would be ready. Of course Forrest has his timing down to a science. I could smell the goodies when I was a mile away. By the way, Forrest is in Gibbon Nebraska pop 1750. Not much to say about this little burg, except that I am approx. 40 miles form Grand Island. Good Mood
8 Miles Today; With the weather finally turning warm, it's a treat to walk. My miles show it. This past week my total was 54.5 miles. If Forrest is not careful, he will be back in Michigan before he's ready. Saturday is the best day to exercise because of the least amount of traffic. Right now Forrest is 5 miles east of Kearney. My next stop is Grand Island, Nebraska. If everything goes well, I'll be in downtown Grand Island next Sunday, May 11. Since I didn't stop in Kearney, I'm obligated to say a few words about a really nice town, Kearney Nebraska, pop 27,500. Kearney was a outpost along the Oregon Trail when it was settled in the middle of the 19th century, thanks mainly to the railroad and the Platte River. Kearney was named after a Civil War General. (WOW! that's a surprise) It seems to Forrest, a whole lot of these mid-west towns are named for military personnel. Now with that said, Forrest can't wait to read up on the history of Grand Island. Kearney Nebraska is home to the University of Nebraska at Kearney, with a student pop of 7000. One final piece of information. Kearney, Nebraska is the halfway point between Boston and San Francisco. How about that people? Walk Forrest Walk

America's New Singing Sensation
7 Miles Today; Not much happening . The weather was overcast, 62 degrees. With my ipod, and my pals Elvis, Alan Jackson, Bruce Springsteen (Glory Days) Forrest was doing his thing. There was some confusion, when people at garage sales (Friday is a big day for garage sales in Michigan) could hear Forrest singing along with Alan Jackson to the song POP A TOP. Forrest thinks he has a nice voice, but the soccer moms at these garage sales thought they were watching some nut walk by . Since I didn't have Jessie-Marie (the dog) with me, Forrest was pretending to be on American Idol, hoping to be America's next singing sensation. Anyway it was fun today. Before I sign off, there is a road race in Brooklyn, NY tomorrow, called the NYRR Half Marathon Grand Prix (13.1 mi). Forrest, my bride Joanne, and Jessie-Marie would liked to say, "GOOD LUCK" Tri-Girl, A footnote: If tri girl is in New York, that means Forrest will be pounding the roads here in Nebraska getting some big time distance between me and tri-girl. Yessssssss........... Forrest will arrive in Kearney Nebraska tomorrow. Walk Forrest Walk

It Must Be The Pooch
7 Miles Today; Forrest got back to the house at around noon today. It must be the time of day I went or Jessie-Marie (the dog), was the drawing card. because Forrest was stopped 3 times by cars, once by a couple in their drive-way, and one person blew their car horn at Forrest. None of the people called me by my real name, it was "your that Forrest Guy" or Walk Forrest Walk. All of them liked Jessie-Marie. Forrest has got a keeper in that pooch. She is a real CHICK MAGNET...........O.K. Now down to business, Forrest is in Odessa, Nebraska pop. 400. I'm on Hwy 30, 141 miles west of Lincoln, 60 miles west of Grand Island, and 10 miles west of Keaney, Nebraska. More on the places later. FYI The State Fish of Nebraska is the Channel Catfish. and the State Soft Drink is "KOOL-AID" I bet you people out there in blog-land are just tickled pink to get that important information.
